Don’t Execute Death Row Inmates, Amnesty Begs Edo


Amnesty International has appealed to the Edo State Government to rescind its decision to carry out the death sentence on two prisoners on death row in the state.It argued that since Nigeria’s justice system was not able to provide a fair trial for many of the death row inmates, it would not be proper to still kill those who did not receive a fair trial and had been on death row for many years.The Director-General, Amnesty International, Mr. Salil Shetty, made the appeal while speaking with journalists when he visited the office of the Human Rights Social Development and Environment Foundation, HURSDEF, in Port Harcourt. Full story...

Trigger-Hungry Cop Bags Death Sentence for Killing 3 yr Old Girl


Three years after he callously killed a three year old girl Kausarat Muritala in cold blood in Lagos, Justice Olabisi Akinlade of the Lagos High Court in Ikeja yesterday sentenced ex-police corporal, Ikechukwu Nwabueze to death by hanging.Justice Akinlade handed down the verdict after reviewing the fact of the case, according to her, the weight of evidence before the court showed that Nwabueze had the intention to kill. Full story...

Naval Rating Given Ten Years for Drowning Daughter

Joseph had gone to Glory Yusuf's place, abducted the baby, and thrown her into the lagoon A naval rating, Joseph Moses, who threw his three-week-old daughter into the Lagos Lagoon, has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment for kidnap and manslaughter.Moses was found guilty of kidnapping and killing his child, Happiness, on February 2, 2012.He and some others had gone to his girlfriend, Glory Yusuf's house at Ajegunle, kidnapped the baby and beat the mother up. Full story...

Nigeria Actor Jailed for Gay Sex


Abuja - A Nigerian actor has been sentenced to three months in prison after allegedly admitting to having sex with a man, deemed an "unnatural offence" under Nigerian law, a prosecutor said on Thursday.Bestwood Chukwuemeka, who is not well known but has reportedly acted in movies produced by Nigeria's prolific Nollywood film industry, was sentenced this week in a magistrates court in the capital Abuja. Full story...
