Politics and Government

Kwara Govt Denies Alleged Plans to Intimidate Political Opponents

As a democratically-elected and constitutionally recognised government that believes in the rule of law and freedom of expression, we cannot intimidate or otherwise abridge citizens’ right to express their views, political or otherwise. It is therefore completely untrue as the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) claims that Kwara State has intimidated or plans to intimidate political opponents. It is ludicrous that the ACN feels the Peoples Democratic Party is unduely agitated over the said exit of some members. The so-called decampees from the PDP are individuals with doubtful political value, so as a PDP administration we are not losing any sleep over their departure. Once they realise their folly they will return shortly. Full story...

Onumah: In Defence of President Jonathan?

By Chido Onumah
FIRST, a caveat: I agree with Reuben Abati. President Jonathan “is a grossly misunderstood President”.It is understandable though if the shoeless and homeless mass of our people who voted for him last year expect a lot from him. That is the least they should expect from a man who claimed he was once like them, but whose presidency has become a nightmare for majority of Nigerians. Having said that, I must also note that I seriously want to “wean” myself from criticising President Jonathan and his administration and I shall explain why. Full story...

Nigeria: Reconstructing Nigeria for Prosperity

In my 2005 National Democracy Day Lecture, I strongly argued that "for sustainable democracy, fundamental changes are required in the constitution, the electoral system, the fiscal federalism, as well as a gamut of legal-institutional reforms that are developmental and capable of promoting private enterprise and competition". Seven years later, I feel more strongly about this point, and almost a sense of urgency to it. In the last two years, I have given several lectures on Nigeria's dysfunctional political economy. I am glad that constitutional amendments are being debated. At least, let us start the talking. There is a systemic failure, and our institutions cannot take Nigeria on a sustainable path to prosperity. In three articles, beginning with this one, I want to join the debate.

Nigeria: 'Okonjo Iweala Lied'

Interview

With the House stepping up the heat on the President via its impeachment moves over budget implementation, rejection of the PIB for being submitted at the beginning of vacation and House angst over SEC DG, Aruma Oteh's, reinstatement, as well as the perceived unseen hands of the presidency in the Farouk Lawan affair, the relationship between the House and the Executive is at a low, low ebb. Minority Leader and House Minority Whip, Representative, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has been in the thick of it all, especially in the last two weeks with some rather interesting brickbats flying between him and the presidency. He had a lot to say on these and more from the United States last Thursday when he fielded questions from Funke Aboyade. Full story...

Nigeria: Jonathan Not President of Niger Delta Alone - Edwin Clark

By Ahuraka Isah and Toni Esu
Ijaw nationalist leader, Chief Edwin Clark, yesterday said that Dr Goodluck Jonathan is the President of Nigeria and not the President of the Niger Delta or the Ijaw people. Clark said this, yesterday, while delivering the '2012 State of the Federation Lecture', organised by the Nigerian Institute for Advanced Legal Studies in Abuja. He, therefore, urged Nigerians not to see Boko Haram insurgency as an attack against Jonathan or his government but rather rise up and see this alien trend as war against every Nigerian including children unborn. Full story...

Nigeria: ACN Condemns First Ladies' Land Tussle

By Onyebuchi Ezigbo
The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has described the legal tussle between the incumbent First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan and her predecessor, Hajiya Turai Yar'Adua, over a plot of land in the Federal Capital territory as 'despicable.' In a statement issued Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji. The Buzz Surrounding First Lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan – Presidency Denies Buying 200 Cars for African First Lady’s Summit

By Adeola Adeyemo
The First Lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan seems to have been in the news quite often in recent times over controversial topics. Though the buzz and public outcry surrounding her appointment as a Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa state is yet to settle down, she is yet again in the news. She is said to be in a squabble with the former first lady, Turai Yar’Adua over a property located in the central business district of Abuja. Although the Attorney General of the Federation has asked the court handling the case to discontinue further hearing, and the case would now be settled out of court, the news again raised some debates across the country. Recently, she was in the news over her purported purchase of 200 cars for the African First Lady’s Summit. A newspaper had reported that the Federal Government procured a total of 200 “exotic cars” for the African First Ladies Summit, which formally opens in Abuja today. Full story...

Nigeria: Time to Unbundle Nigeria

When an organisation becomes unwieldy, inefficient, corrupt, wasteful and incapable of delivering on its mandate or bringing value to its stakeholders, one of the accepted solutions is to unbundle it. That would mean the creation of smaller, more efficient organizations with greater efficiencies of scale. It would also imply specializations in the different organizations so that one mammoth entity is not saddled with the responsibility of doing everything. Full story...Source: http://allafrica.com
