President Goodluck Jonathan threatens to Withdraw National Honours from Holders with Questionable Character

The conferrment of national honours on some Nigerians has been greeted with mixed reactions as some people have questioned the charcters of people chosen to receive these awards.
Yesterday, while addressing Nigerians after the investiture on 155 persons who received the 2012 national honours, President Goodluck Jonathan directed the National Honours Committee to compile a list of persons conferred with national honours whose current credibility is questionable. He threatened that the Federal Government would withdraw the honours from conferees that lacked credibility. Full story...

National Honours as Chieftaincy Titles

Sometime in 1996, then Head of State, the late General Sani Abacha, was said to have been handed a list of nominees for National Honours, subject to the approval of the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC) which he chaired. After going through the names, Abacha reportedly looked straight at the official who gave him the paper and remarked: “These are the Nigerians you think merit National Honours? More than half of the people on this list are crooks!” That year, no Nigerian was bestowed a national honour and I really cannot recall if Abacha ever conferred any until he died.

Mike Adenuga, 148 other Nigerians for National Honours Awards

Nigeria: House Wants Ibru, Akingbola Stripped of National Honours
The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee, which investigated the "near collapse of the Nigerian capital market", Tuesday recommended that Mrs. Cecilia Ibru and Erastus Akingbola, former Managing Directors of the defunct Oceanic Bank International Plc and Intercontinental Bank Plc, respectively, be stripped of their national honours. This formed part of the recommendation of the committee's report, which was submitted at the close of plenary by its chairman Hon. Tukur El-Sudi, weeks after the investigation was concluded.
