Telecom Nigeria: Stakeholders Rise Over Local Content Policy in Telecom Sector


Business - There are renewed protests in the telecommunications sector against the Federal Government's inability to enforce the Nigerian Investment Promotion Council Act, (NIPC) of 1990. The Act has to do with local content and expatriate quota and those clamouring that it should be enforced in the telecoms sector are saying that it will ensure the inclusion of local contractors and engender adequate youth employment.The protesters are saying that although non implementation of local content law is not limited to telecoms sector alone, there was danger in the trend which if not reversed urgently, perennially pins Nigeria down as a digitally colonized nation by the western economies.

Nigeria: Protecting Local Interests in Telecoms Business

Telecoms analyst and legal practitioner, Jiti Ogunye, has challenged government to come up with good policies that will checkmate capital flight in the telecoms industry and aimed at strengthening the Nigerian economy.For 11 years of GSM operation in Nigeria, one may be quick to say that the country and her people must have benefited so much from operators in the area of job creation and economic development, considering the huge profit declared yearly by the telecoms operators. But Telecoms analyst and legal practitioner, Jiti Ogunye thinks otherwise, blaming the situation on weak telecoms policy, which he said, encouraged capital flight.Full story...

Nigeria: NBC At 20 - Setting the Pace in Broadcasting


Broadcasting in Nigeria dated back seventy seven year ago during which National Broadcasting Commission of Nigeria NBC was established following deregulation of the sector in 1992 during General Ibrahim Babangida's administration when Professor Sam Oyovbare was the Minister of Information through Decree 38.
Following the Promulgation of the law (Decree 38) establishing NBC in August 24th, 1992, the National Broadcasting Commission was charged with the licensing, monitoring, regulating and conducting research in broadcasting in Nigeria.Full story...
