CJ’s Appointment: NJC Throws Osun Judiciary Into Confusion


National Judicial Council (NJC) may have thrown Osun State Judiciary into confusion following its decision to step down the consideration of the state’s nominees for appointment as the substantive chief judge (CJ) for the state.The state Judicial Service Commission had forwarded three nominees to the NJC for consideration, following the pending retirement of the outgoing CJ of the state, Justice Olaniyi Ojo. NJC Rejects Lagos Judge as Osun CJ •Asks Aregbesola to Follow Seniority List

STRONG indications emerged on Wednesday in Abuja that the National Judicial Council (NJC) shot down the nomination of Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Lagos State Judiciary as the next Chief Judge of Osun State.Oyewole, a native of Ila-Orangun, in Osun State, reportedly topped the list of three sent to the council by the appointing authority, Osun State governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola.The council, which is the recommending authority, at its meeting on Wednesday, reportedly refused to consider the list which had Oyewole as the favoured of the appointing authority, having been placed above the other two most senior judges in the state. Full story...

Nigerians are daily inundated with media drama going by the security operatives of a variety of high profile arrests of suspects allegedly involved in a number of offences ranging from terrorism which is a present and potentially distabilizing danger to the existence of Nigeria to other serious cases such as crude oil theft and diversion and/or theft of subsidy fund by members of the seemingly untouchable crude oil cabals that are closely linked with high profile government officials at the federal level.The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) are also known to have announced and celebrated in the local media, several high profile arrests of alleged kidnapping kingpins, but none of these alleged kidnappers has been convicted for this serious crime against humanity. Full story...

Judge’s Transfer Stalls Bankole’s Trial


The trial of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, for alleged fraud was Monday stalled because the trial judge, Justice Donatus Okorowo, was transferred to the Taraba Division of the Federal High Court.Bankole was arraigned in June 2011 on a 16-count charge of contract inflation and embezzlement of public funds.
At the last hearing, Justice Okorowo had adjourned the trial until September 24, 25, 26 and 27.Reacting to the judge’s transfer, the prosecutor, Mr Festus Keyamo, said he was waiting to hear from the chief judge of the court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, to know if Justice Okorowo would be coming from Taraba to preside over the trial or if the case would be assigned to another judge. Full story...

AGF Warns Politicians Over Re Openeing Onshore/Offshore Account Debate

Nigeria: Corruption - CJN Blames AGF for Delay in Prosecution of High Profile Cases

Abuja — The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, Wednesday, blamed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, for unwittingly contributing to undue delay in the prosecution of high profile cases of corruption in the country.The CJN who stated this on a day she administered oath on 25 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria, insisted that "the courts cannot on their own prosecute criminal cases," noting that "on the streets of Nigeria and beyond, the cry for justice lingers."

Respect Between the Bar, the Bench Should be Reciprocal

EFFORTS at reforming Nigeria’s judiciary, many stakeholders in the legal community believe may be a waste of time, if there is no cordial relationship between the Bar and Bench. The administration of justice in Nigeria, after all stands on a tripod, made up of the Bar, the Bench and the Public.The Bar and the Bench as the conveyor belt of justice, must, therefore, maintain a cordial relationship, especially when the code of the profession enjoins them to maintain the dignity, appropriated to the judicial office.

Nigeria: Corrupt, Non-Performing Judges Will Be Disgraced - NBA

Aloma Mariam Mukhtar:A Tradition of Firsts

THE inauguration of Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar yesterday by President Goodluck Jonathan as the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) is a continuation of her trail blazing trend both at the bar and on the bench. Called to the Nigerian Bar on June 26, 1967, after being called to the English Bar earlier in November, 1966, she became the first female lawyer from the northern part of the country. She is also the first female judge to be elevated to the Court of Appeal when she joined the appellate court in 1987. On May 10, 2005, she became the first female justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.Full story
