Reps C’ttee Flags Off Public Sessions on Constitution Review Thursday


The House of Representatives special adhoc committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution has concluded arrangement for the flag-off of the Peoples’ Public Sessions on the review of the 1999 Constitution in the 360 federal constituencies in the country.A statement by Oke Epia, the spokesman for the committee chairman and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, quoted Ihedioha as saying that 21 most important items have been shortlisted as priorities in the ongoing process. Full story...

Senate Amends Anti-Terrorism Bill


The Senate on Wednesday passed proposed amendments to the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2011.Under the now amended Act, the National Security Adviser or the Inspector- General of Police has powers to seal up a property or vehicle without a warrant.This, however, is subject to existence of sufficient ground to believe that doing so before obtaining a warrant was best for public order or safety.The amended proposal also retains life imprisonment as punishment for convicted terrorists while those convicted for financing and acts preparatory to or in furtherance of an act of terrorism, will also be liable to sentences ranging from five years to life imprisonment. Full story...

Budget 2013: Lawmakers Rejects Oct. 4 Presentation


President Goodluck Jonathan would not be presenting the 2013 budget on October 4 as earlier scheduled before the joint session of the National Assembly, it emerged yesterday.Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal had on Tuesday read a letter from President Jonathan conveying his intention to present the 2013 budget at a joint session on October 4.The lawmakers maintained that it was impossible for them to consider the acceptance of the presentation of the 2013 budget while the 2012 budget is having issues as the President was yet to convince Nigerians on the implementation of the current budget. Full story...

Reps Move Against Tambuwal

THE House of Representatives was thrown into a stormy executive session on Wednesday over a plot by some lawmakers to unseat the Aminu Tambuwal-led House leadership.The House Leader, Honourable Mulikat Adeola-Akande, had moved that the House should dissolve into an executive session which lasted for almost two hours.The executive session, Nigerian Tribune learnt, was a move by the House leadership to douse the tension of impeachment threat by some aggrieved members who had earlier sent text messages to members indicating their plans. Full story...

Nigeria: House Minority Leader Admits 'Misconduct' in U.S.

The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila (ACN, Lagos), yesterday admitted that he was sanctioned by the State of Georgia, United States of America, for "professional misconduct and negligence" over the sum of $25,000 (equivalent N3.9million) belonging to a client.
Gbajabiamila said this in a statement yesterday in Abuja in response to a publication by Saharareporters.com suggesting that the lawmaker fraudulently converted a client's $25,000 personal injury claims to private use while practicing as a lawyer in the US in 2002. The report claimed that the Minority Leader had shown remorse and returned the money as a result of which the State of Georgia disbarred him in addition to suspending his law practice license for 36 months. Full story...
