FG Set to Review Penalties For National Flag Abuse

The Director-General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Mike Omeri, has revealed readiness of the Federal Government to review the section of the constitution stating the penalty for offenders or abusers of the national flag.Mr Omeri made this known on Wednesday, at a press briefing on the maiden Nigerian National Symbol’s Day at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.Mr Omeri frowned on recent attitudes of Nigerians toward the national flag. He said that the initial punishment for abusers was N100. He explained that it was converted from the former 58 pounds before naira lost its value.

Nigeria: Jonathan Pledges Commitment to Rule of Law
President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday assured Nigerians that his administration would not compromise on its respect for the rule of law as well as promotion of social justice.Jonathan made this assurance at the Third Chief Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture in Lagos. The lecture was organised by the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GAFAMORG), in honour of the late lawyer and human rights activist, who died on September 5, 2009 at the age of 71.Jonathan, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Civil Society and International Media, Mr Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr., described Fawehinmi as a patriot who fought vigorously for democracy and the rule of law. Nigeria: We Are Not Bound By FOI Act - NNPC
The government-owned corporation disclosed this in a letter, while responding to Daily Trust's request for information concerning its recent recruitment in line with the FOI Act. FOI Act was signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan on May 28, 2011 to make access to public information easy. In January 29, 2012, the office of Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, issued implementation guidelines through a circular titled: "Implementation of the Freedom of Information Act 2011 and the Reporting Requirements under Section 29 thereof (HAGF/MDAS/FOIA/2012/I), to all government ministries, departments, agencies and corporations for implementation." The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is not bound by the Freedom of Information Act (FOI), its Secretary and Legal Adviser, Anthony C. Madichie, has said. Full story...
